On the other hand, there is the question of whether you want to be micro-managing tactical battles or focusing on grand strategy. Fair enough, but just know that the base game feels feature complete and like it wasn't left incomplete intentionally to make room for DLCs. However, you might be the type of person who wants to wait for all DLCs to come out for Planetfall and then to buy it as a bundle. On the one hand, there is your willingness to buy EL's DLCs/get addons installed, which involves trusting a random executable downloaded from the internet and requires spending your hard-earned cash on DLCs, while Planetfall is newer, more expensive out of the box, but feels excellent, polished and complete out of the box. However, the big differentiators should mostly be related to cost and your preference between strategy and tactics, which are the differences covered above. I have played a lot of both games and like them both a lot.

Planetfall has a simpler strategy layer and is very heavily oreinted towards tactical combat. It also is still receiving support from the devs.ĮL has a much heavier focus on macro-strategy and has a pretty minimal tactical battle simulator that can be left to autobattle sometimes and played through on fast gamespeed all of the rest of the time. Planetfall is younger in its release cycle, only has one DLC, and while the DLC is cool it doesn't feel particularly essential. It also has a community patch that fixes many issues, including the ai, so if you get EL get the community patch and look into the expansions. Planetfall is newer, but it is shaping up to become one of my all-time favorites as well.ĮL has many expansions, some of which feel necessary.
